VW group launched a India 2.0 specific strategy and announced 1 billion EURO investment for India. The Skoda Kylaq came out as a baby out of that strategy from the group (VW and Skoda). After that the 1.0 TSI engine was developed and prepared for extreme heat and different ethanol blended fuel quality, this engine was then tested in India for almost 10 Lakh kms. This testing included different terrain like mountains and dry desert conditions. Then later keeping ethanol blending in mind the engine was tuned. And finally we got a new India specific 1.0 TSI engine. Meanwhile the company prepared their global MQB platform for India specific conditions an it was named as MQB A0 IN platform. Making this combination the group launched Kushaq, Slavia, Taigun and Virtus in the same engine and same platform. And finally in 2024 after retuning the same engine as per the E20 fuel and redesigning the platform Skoda launched Kylaq.

The Engine of the Skoda Kylaq is a very small in size

  • Weight is only 90kgs.
  • Displacement is 999CC with a turbocharged 3 cylinder engine. It is a 12 valve TSI DOHC engine which produces 116PS power and 178NM torque.
  • This can cover 0 to 100 in 10.5 seconds.
  • The top speed of this engine is 170 kms approx.
  • Its a front wheel drive car with claimed mileage is 19.8kmpl.

It has timing belt instead of timing chain whose work is to make a synchronous movement between cam shaft and crank shaft. It comes with dual cam shafts so that the movement of the valve becomes more precise. This engine uses Dual VVT (Variable valve timing) technology giving more control to the valve timing and ultimately its a blend of power and fuel economy. This engine comes with a FGT type of turbocharger which has a waste gate. This waste gate manages the pressure of the exhaust gases and it is connected with an actuator electronically operated to manage its opening and closing. This engine has split cooling system means separate cooling for head and for block.

The Skoda Kylaq was tested even before its launch. It has almost all the safety features even in its lower variants like ABS, ESP/ECS, Traction control, multi collision break, roll over protection, electronic differential lock, Driver & co driver, break disc wiping, side curtain air bags, total 6 air bags, child locking in rear, seats belts for all passengers, engine immobilizer, rear parking sensors etc.

Skoda 1.0 TSI engine follows a quite refined technology in 3 cylinder engine category. Its build quality is sturdy, the mid range torque is superb in performance. Totally it is a fun to drive vehicle with good maneuverability and responsive engine. It is able to pull the car really well. It delivers smoother performance in mid range as torque delivery in mid range is linear. This engine also uses advanced cooling system. The engine feels lighter than Kushaq. Is the Skoda Kylaq worth buying?

The safety rating is excellent of this car it received 5 star in BNCAP. It is suitable for 4 people. Rear seat only 2 can sit comfortably and it is not suitable for 5 persons. At the rear there is very less space remains for middle passenger. Person with good height will face problem of leg space at rear specially. The boot space is enough and in its default condition it is 360L. The ride quality and handling is top notch, it feels comfortable on most of the Indian roads, sometimes the suspension feels stiffer it is tuned as per the performance and the comfort also. The clutch feels little heavy and it is having long travel. Also the gear shift is not so smooth. So it is a car with good performance worth buying for person having equal highway ride as in city.

Align these points with your use case like driving places and your requirements. Any TGDI engine is not suitable for a city traffic condition. It is good for a person with 50 city and 50 highways driving conditions. It is not for totally city running. This car is best for highways the real performance can be seen there. It will give real mileage on the highways conditions.

What are the disadvantages of a 1.0 TSI engine?

Disadvantages are as follows-

  • Turbo lag in city drive and at low RPMs like below 1500-1700 RPMs, there is delay in torque delivery
  • Due to this nature the fuel economy of this car drops to great extent specially in city drive
  • Also due to this technology its running carbon foot print also increases a lot. Means carbon deposit chances are higher.
  • Really it is a very refined 3 cylinder engine but still it can have vibrations at idle condition.
  • The interior can disappoint some people specially the person who are gping to buy its top variant. Also as per the price range it could have offered a better quality. The interior is of a okay quality.
  • Passenger space is cramped and limited.
  • The top model seems little over priced but the base variant is better in term of value for money.
  • The maintenance cost of this car is also high. If not maintain properly this car will cost higher in long term. It is because of the technical complexity of its engine.
  • Timing belt of this engine is also a concern. Try to replace it before the warranty gets expired if you notice any problem.
  • AC cooling issue has been noticed by some buyers also,
  • Extended warranty should be taken if planning to buy this car for a long time and if your car runs only in city driving condition.
  • Reverse camera quality is very poor.
  • This car is also not suitable for first time car buyer because of its vulnerability issues with clutch and engine.
  • There will be low resale value.
