Mahindra 3XO Diesel Engine Features and specifications | Understanding the 3XO diesel engine.

Whenever we talk about any diesel engine car we can not ignore Mahindra for sure. 3XO is a subcompact SUV and the market of this segment is booming like never before in India. So today we will be talking about the Diesel engine in 3XO car for this segment buyer. We will understand Mahindra 3XO diesel engine features and specifications to help taking a rational decision.

Mahindra 3XO Diesel Engine Details

Mahindra 3XO comes in 3 engine options two engines are the petrol 1.2L mStallion TCMPFI and TGDI engines. The Third one is a 1.5L CRDi diesel engine. We will be talking about this diesel engine in today’s discussion. We will talk about its technical specifications, its features, its pros and cons etc.

Mahindra went with Renault as a joint venture in 2005, later Mahindra ended that Joint Venture and acquired all its stakes in 2010. But till 2016 Mahindra realized the necessity of a BS norms compliant engine and needed a platform to support the sub 4 meter cars. So later in 2019 Mahindra launched XUV 300 that was based on the 1.5L engine which the company developed after the learning experience from Renault. This car proved to be a success for Mahindra in compact SUV segment.

In this engine people experienced 300NM high torque and in 5 year Mahindra able to sell approx 2,42,000 units. And in April 2024 launched 2nd generation of XUV 300 as 3XO with the same engine but some added features.

The technical specifiactions of this engine is shown in the above image. This is a 1.5L Diesel engine with 4 cylinder inline engine with approximately 117PS power and 300NM torque. The top speed of this engine is 175KMPH.

The engine of the 3XO is very heavy. The Cylinder Block and Cylinder Head is made from cast iron, it has DOHC shaft and the Cylinder Head cover is made of Aluminum. Keeping Diesel engine lighter in weight is very difficult because its cylinder block needs to be very strong. Another important thing is its fuel injection system. In all its fuel injection system the working of ECU is very important. In this CRDi engine high pressure pump is the heart which can withstand high pressure of 2000Bar. It maintains the availability of Diesel in high pressure rail pipes for the injectors. As the ECU command these injectors inject fuel as per their firing orders.

The diesel engine needs more air and there is a need to compress that air quickly before entering the combustion chamber. That is why diesel engines require Turbo charger to maintain sufficient air quantity every time. So in 3XO the turbo is used is a VGT(Variable Geometry Turbo) type of turbo. It controls the quantity of air and also controls the pressure of the air required in the engine. To control the flow of air the VGT turbo uses small fins or vanes which attaches to the electronic actuator. The actuator decides when to open or close these vanes. The engine as per the load and RPM allows the air to pass. This turbo helps in reducing the turbo lag specially at low RPMs.

For better thermal efficiency in 3XO there is a heavy intercooler given. Cool air helps in providing more oxygen as cool air is denser than hot air. There is an EMS (Engine Management System) system included in every modern car which includes the injection and the ECU. EMS system helps in managing the air fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. This result of this system is 3XO’s different driving modes ZIP, ZAP, ZOOM. To manage this system the same air fuel mixer is being utilized very efficiently.

  • ZIP mode means low power mode: During this time a Lean mixture will be injected in the combustion chamber.
  • ZAP mode means mix of power and efficiency: During this time a Balanced mixture will be injected in the combustion chamber.
  • ZOOM mode means high power mode: During this time a Rich mixture will be injected in the combustion chamber.

Mahindra 3XO is available in 2 types of gear boxes. One is 6 speed Manual and 6 speed AMT gearbox.

Mahindra 3XO diesel engine features and specifications

This car has plenty of features like dual zone climate control, top model is with blind spot monitoring system, Auto dimming IRVM, electronic parking break, auto hold 6 air bags across the model is standard, and has 5 star safety rating, ADAS L2 features, Harman Kardon speaker system.

Which diesel engine is used in Mahindra 3XO?

Mahindra uses a CRDI 1.5L Diesel engine with 4 cylinder inline configuration. This engine approximately produces 117PS power and 300NM torque. The top speed of this engine is 175KMPH. It can cover 0 to 100km in just 12 seconds. This engine is a high torquey engine which gives instant power. It is more powerful than the engine in TATA Nexon diesel which gives 260NM torque.

What is the mileage of 3XO diesel engine?

The mileage of 3XO Diesel engine is approx 12-14kmpl in city and on the highways it is approx 19-20kmpl depending upon the driving conditions. The mileage depends largely on the driving style. High revving and rash driving with sudden acceleration can reduce the mileage to a large extent. It is inversely proportion to the performance. For fetching maximum mileage there is a need to drive the car linearly accelerate smoothly.

What are the disadvantages of Mahindra 3XO?

There are disadvantages of mahindra 3XO. Like after crossing 3500RPMs the performance gets degrade a bit, the engine feels laggy after that and starts to vibrate also. It gives Good mileage on highways but in city conditions the mileage is very low. The MT gearbox works superb but in its AMT there are jerks and negative feedback about its performance. But these issues are not much visible in linear acceleration driving. AMT is good for city driving condition but still there is turbo lag in this engine. But no diesel car is good for only city driving condition. It is good option for a highway cruising.
