There is no denial of the fact that Tata has done a remarkable job when it relaunched its flagship product Tata Sierra. Although it only carry the name and some exterior design elements from the old version still people are loving this car as the old one. Tata Sierra comes in 3 different engine options. So what are Tata Sierra 1.5 L engine technical specifications. We will understand is it worth buying or not and see how this engine is different from its Revotron NA engine and kryojet CRDi engine.

What is the technical specification of Tata Sierra?

Tata Sierra come in 3 different engine options.
- 1.5L NA Revotron Engine– It is a inline 4 cylinder engine which produces 106PS power and 145NM torque generated only at 2100RPM. The Weight of this engine is 120kg. The engine has higher Compression Ration of 13.0:1. It is a DOHC 16 valves engine with single VVT technology. The VVT technology helps to precisely manage the valve timing as per the RPM and Load. It balances the efficiency and fuel economy as well. This engine has Two Injectors rather than one which are placed at ports to inject the fuel. It comes in 6 speed MT and 7 speed DCA transmission option. The 7 speed DCA gear box here is a new gearbox and which is same as DCT but it does not perform like Hyundai DCT.

- 1.5L TGDI Hyperion Engine– It is the newest engine from the Tata motors. It is a inline 4 cylinder engine which produces 160PS power and 255NM torque. Weight of the engine is 130kg. The engine comes with a compression ration of 10.5:1. It is a DOHC 16 valves engine with VVT technology. It comes in 6 speed MT and 6 speed AT Torque Converter which is a Japanese sourced torque converter gearbox. There is power loss in the Torque Converter and it is also low fuel efficient.

- 1.5L CRDI Kryojet Diesel Engine– It is also a inline 4 cylinder engine which produces 118PS power and 260NM torque in MT and 280NM torque in AT. The Weight of the engine is 145kg with compression ration of 16.5:1. It is also DOHC 16 valves engine VVT engine. It comes with 6 speed MT and 6 speed AT Torque converter. The torque in AT is higher than the in the MT. It tells that the AT is very efficiently used in this engine.

Tata Sierra 1.5 L Design and Specifications
The car is built on a Monocoque Chassis in which the chassis and the frame are integrated. The old Sierra was built on a Body On Frame chassis design. The car’s platform decides the car size, powertrain options, features, safety and its capabilities. It uses its own ARGOS platform which combines the strength of Curvv based ATLUS platform and Harrier’s Omega ARC platform. So based on the versatility of this platform Tata is planning to launch RWD and AWD options of the Tata Sierra. The 7 seater version is also expected to come in Tata Sierra very soon. The car overall comes with 22 safety features. But the Hill decent control does not come in its base variant.

Electric AC control is touch based so this is not a good sign. Also its 3 screen setup is not that useful specially for driver. This types of control are distracting and can be dangerous too when we are driving the car on highways or city. Also the electronics are prone to glitches. If any of these electronics become damage then it will prove to be expensive.
Tata suspension are well known for its comfort. The Sierra comes with FDD (frequency dependent damping) suspension and we will understand the meaning of Frequency here. It depends on the vibrations that comes from the roads. So at low speeds this technology makes the suspension stiffer and reduces the body roll. And at high speeds it makes the suspension soft. The car has a bigger wheel base which make it more comfort oriented and also has a higher ground clearance. This car has a underbody protective shield beneath its engine which is a good work from the company.

Is the Tata Sierra engine reliable?
Tata did extra hard work in tuning the Sierra 1.5L engine. We can see there is high torque generated in its NA engine at its lowest RPM @2100 only. The Tata Sierra is a big size car with a weight of 1300kgs, so in its NA engines the per tonn power and per tonn torque drops significantly, due to which the initial torque delivery is kept high and deliver at early RPMs. And because of this higher torque Tata handled the power figures very smartly. This is done by using advanced engineering at multiple steps. The higher compression ratio, good thermal efficiency, the engine geometry and the tuning of intake and exhaust gases decides this torque delivery at what RPMs.
Another thing is that its Diesel engine produces two different high torque 260NM and another is 280NM. The 280NM torque is generated using its Torque Converter. Which means it’s tuning is done very efficiently.

Which engine is better in Tata Sierra?
The Tata Sierra comes in three different engines. For deciding which engine is better we have to decide our use case also. There is some analysis based on the power figure and engine specifications.
- The NA Revotron Engine is better for city drive and Bumper to bumper traffic. It is also a sufficient engine choice for highways and a free flow traffic. But it can feel underpowered in hills and mountains. It is a low maintenance engine as compared to other two engines.
- The TGDI Hyperion Engine has a better power and better torque. For city drive only this engine is not recommended because its a TGDI engine. But it is very good for highways drive and for enthusiasts people. Actually it is good for mix driving condition but it will be of more use on the highways.
- The CRDI KRYOJET Engine is also not a city driving engine. Because it is an diesel engine added DPF issues will be there so highway driving is a must for this engine. It is suitable for more highways and not city driving. It is also a better choice for hilly and mountain area.

What is the mileage of Tata Sierra 1.5 engine?
The mileage of the Tata Sierra is best in its diesel engine. The NA Revotron engine is not that fuel efficient. In city the Sierra will give approx 10-12kmpl mileage from its NA petrol engine and on the highways it will go upto 14-15 kmpl driving under 90kmph speed. The diesel engine which is good for the highway driving will be able to give 13-14 kmpl in city and upto 18-19kmpl on the highways.
The 1.5L Hyperion engine is not expected to give better mileage because it is more performance based engine. Although Tata has put good efforts to fetch maximum efficiency and produce better fuel economy from this engine but still it will be able to give approx 10kmpl mileage in city and 15kmpl on the highways.
