Car Overheating In Summer | How to Prevent Car From Overheating In Summer

Summers have arrived and in the subtropical country like India we experience more heat than many other countries. In such conditions car overheating in summer becomes a major issue for the engine health. Here we have come with some tips so that we get effective solution on how to prevent car from overheating in summer.

What can cause overheating in an engine

There are some special points in your car that we have to keep checking in summer season. We have to see what outcome can occur if there is problem in any one of them. We will see them in details.

  • Radiator– For making engine cool car has Radiator in which coolant keeps flowing. That coolant circulates in the engine and in the radiator and throw out the engine heat. So in this way you should get the radiator checked in summers. Sometime the radiator gets chocked. It can be cleaned with a simple flow of water and by removing the dust. Cleaning it is a very good practice.

  • Coolant Condition– First of all check the coolant level and quality of the coolant also. If needed then flush the coolant and top up a new coolant as well. Coolant usually lasts 4-5 years so first check its proper condition and then refill. Use coolant which is recommended by the manufacturer. Check the color of the coolant already used it is green then we have to fill only green one.
  • Head Gas Kit Leakage– If coolant level going down or the coolant having bubbles that means there can be problem in Head gas kit. The head gas kit gets leakage. It will harm the engine because in this condition engine already gets overheated. So Coolant tells the problem inside.
  • Catalytic Converter– The exhaust system of the engine is where the gases goes out from the engine after burning. In this system the exhaust gases passes through catalytic converter. So there may be a condition that this catalytic converter gets chocked because of carbon deposits in it. In the chocked condition the engine has to take more load. In summers specially it overheats a lot. So the catalytic converter must be cleaned if it is in a bad condition. Try to clean it in such a way that no breakage should happen inside the catalytic converter and to its structure.

  • Break Oil– Check the break system, the problem in the break system happen due to either air trap in the break oil or due to the the heat generation in the summers. The break oil is the main component that gets affected in both the situations. So try to check the break oil in all these conditions. we need not to remove and change the break oil regularly only get it’s quality checked is necessary. If need then only change the break oil. otherwise get it flushed in every 30000-40000kms which is very essential practice specially for summers.
  • Air Intake Manifold– Get the intake manifold checked from where the air enters inside the engine, it should not get chocked, air should have a sufficient space for entering, specially for turbocharger cars, if this system gets chocked then insufficient air enters in the engine and this can overheat the engine and a bad situation for summers. clean the air filter in summer try to clean it in every 2000-3000kms. specially if the weather is dusty and you driver that car in dusty environment then it should be cleaned in 2000kms running,
  • The V-belt– Taking power from the crank shaft It helps in running the water pump system the AC system and the alternator. In summers it gets harder overtime due to heat so if this gets affected then alternator will stop working so try to check for any cracks on it. It also gets loose in summers so try to get it fixed if such condition is observe. If in case it fails then engine will overheat because water pump will stop working, electrical failure will occur because alternator is connected from here. Sometimes breaks can get failed because break is also connect with this system and steering will get harder if there is hydraulic steering wheel.
  • AC Cooling Coil– Get the AC cooling coil checked, AC will need higher load, cooling will be inefficient and engine load will increase. Check the cabin filter properly clean it for any blockage use a foam cleaner which can enter inside and the cleaning dusty accumulation easily.
  • Condenser– Clean the condenser properly, because the condenser is placed at front and the radiator at its back, so the possibility is that it can get dusty particle and insect and flies trapped and can choke it. The condenser help to get cabin cooling faster and thus the AC will not take much load. This will also reduce the engine load and reduce engine heating.

Car Overheating In Summer Issues

No service center tell you this much truth and nobody recommends this. Here we have more precautionary measure and we will see what should be done even before the problems arrives.

Tyre Pressure– Check the tyre pressure in summer before going. The tyre pressure in summers get increased overtime. The gas filled inside expands in summer and due to which the pressure inside the tyre increases slowly, so check the pressure try to keep it under 32 PSI.

Cabin Ventilation– Proper ventilation should be there in the summers, do not cover the car for a long time if proper ventilation is not available. Because the heat inside work as a green house effect and interior car temperature becomes higher than the atmospheric temperature outside. So the plastic part gets affected more in heat and generate harmful gases in which is not good for human health also. so try to put window open a little.

Engine Oil– Check the engine oil, also the condition of it, it should not get level down proper filling with recommended grade the oil should be filled.

Wires in the Hood– Do proper maintenance for the wires, joints and connections. If any wire related work has been done in the engine then get it properly fitted. Loose connection specially is harmful and it may catch instant fire and spark. Make it secure by getting the loose connection fitted properly.

Battery Terminals– check the battery negative terminal provided for ground its exposed to air and may induce spark in the car so, there should be a fitting.

Is it normal for a car to overheat in summer?

There are many such cases that a car can get heavily breakdown. Summer season is the worst season for cars. If not maintained properly then the chances of engine malfunction is higher, engine failure is also a possibility. In summers we have to keep in mind that engine should not get heated. If engine gets over heat then it means 50% of engine life is lost. To be safe from over heat specially in summers we need to take steps that we have discussed here.

Should I turn off the AC if my car is overheating?

Turning off the AC is recommended in the overheat condition. Even it is recommended that engine should be stop if there is an overheating issue occurs. AC works using the power generated from the engine. Actually AC increases the load on the engine. So this load can increase the engine overheating. In such situation we should stop the car and

How to diagnose car overheating?

Cars have an indicator inside the meter console. It shows the temperature of the engine. So whenever the temperature is high that means the engine is overheating. Also there is a coolant indication in blue color. If the coolant indication comes in the meter console that means the coolant level is low. So never ignore that. Also if there is any smoke comes from the radiator then that means engine got overheated. Now in some particular conditions like Coolant getting bubbles and its level going low. If engine oil level goes low, AC not cooling properly, the radiator is chocked and if the Air filter is clogged then that means car must be getting overheat. So do a proper checking of all these points on time.
