Maruti and Hyundai in 2023 launched their two very versatile products. One is Fronx and another is Exter. These are the two cars that has shown their capability right after the launch. These two cars are almost the same segment although Exter is smaller than Fronx but they have same engine and both are an entry level crossovers. These two cars are the most reliable cars and falls in the crossovers or we can say these are the subcompact SUVs. So to find out which one is better we will be considering the NA engine for the comparison of both the cars.

Both the engines are naturally aspirated engines the comparison can be seen in the image itself. Fronx has superb compression ration of 12:1 whereas compression ratio of Exter is 10.5:1.

Both comes with MPFI fuel injection and both comes with dual VVT, 16 valve, DOHC 4 cylinder engines. Dual VVT precisely operate (open and close) for better fuel economy and better power. But the Fronx engine has dual jet injector while the Exter has Single injector for fuel injection. Exter MPFI engine is lighter in weight when compared to Fronx. But the Fronx is faster can achieve 0 to 100 in 12 seconds and top speed is also better for Fronx. Both the cars comes with timing chain unlike skoda cars in which timing belt is given for the purpose of reducing NVH and making engine low weight. But the timing chain increases the reliability of the engine as timing belt is considered less reliable and less durable than timing chain.

Both the cars has manual and AMT gear boxes offerings, When Robotics and Electric Actuators installed in a Manual gear box then it becomes AMT transmission. Extre comes with MT and AT with padel shifters while Fronx comes with the MT and AMT auto gear shift.

The fronx has 3 engine options, one comes in Turbo petrol booster jet engine which is the most powerful option among all. This turbo petrol is an 1.0L 998CC, inline 3 cylinder engine produces 100PS power and 147NM torque. It comes in 5MT and 6AT transmission options.

Another engine is K12N, naturally aspirated 1.2L 1197cc, inline 4 cylinder petrol engine which produces 89.7PS power and 113NM torque. It comes in 5MT and 5AMT transmission options.

In Exter it has only one engine option which is naturally aspirated 1.2L 1197cc, inline 4 cylinder kappa petrol engine which produces 83PS power and 113NM torque. It comes in 5MT and 5 smart auto AMT transmission option.

Another is NA1.2L 1197cc, inline 4 cylinder kappa petrol plus CNG engine which produces 69PS power and 95NM torque. It comes only in 5MT transmission option.

Dimension wise Fronx is wider and lengthy than Exter. Also Fronx has better wheelbase, Fronx has a better ground clearance of 190 mm. But the boot space of fronx is smaller than Exter. Exter has a better CNG tank of 60L which claimed to fill upto 10kgs GAS, whereas tank capacity of Fronx is lower at 55L which claimed to fill upto 9kgs GAS. The claimed mileage of Fronx is 28.51KmpKg, for Exter it is 27.10kmpkg. Here Exter comes in dual cylinder technology which manages to provide better boot space with CNG option than Fronx. Which is better, Hyundai Exter or Suzuki Fronx?

Actually this depends on your choice. Exter feels better inside and provide better cabin experience in terms of interior quality. It looks more premium. But interior space is less in Exter. It is good for city drive as there is only one engine option. It comes with dual CNG cylinders. It feels small and compact in size compared to Fronx. The mileage is little less than Fronx. Although The headroom is good.

Fronx has more space inside but it has cheap quality material used specially for interior plastics. Look and feel is not as premium in fronx. But it has better engine options better mileage and better space. It is good for 5 persons.

The NCAP safety test has not been done in India for both the cars. Feature wise Exter has TPMS, ESC VSM, Hill hold assist, rear view camera, ISOFIX child mount, 6 airbags standard, 26 standard safety features, Sunroof.

Fronx feature includes TPMS, ESC, traction control, Hill hold assist, rear view camera, ISOFIX child mount, 6 airbags standard, ABS EBD, 360 degree camera, HUD display, Wireless charger and Suzuki car connect features. There is No sunroof option.

The Petrol claimed mileage of Fronx is 21.5kmpl(MT) and 22.9kmpl (AMT) and Exter is 19.2kmpl (MT) and 19.5kmpl(AMT).

What are the disadvantages of Maruti Fronx car?

  • The headroom is less specially for rear passenger due to coupe design.
  • Interior material feel is not good. Exter looks more premium than fronx.
  • Plastic quality is also cheap and not durable.
  • Cheap wheel cover quality. The wheel cover gets scratches and they come off very easily.
  • Rusting issues have been noticed on the panels.
  • Exterior wheel arch cladding is also of a weak plastic quality.
  • Seats are not much comfortable. Cushion is very soft not good for long ride. Also provide less thigh support.
  • Lack Sunroof while other car in this segment provides it.

What is the weakness of Hyundai Exter?

  • Exter has only one engine option which is naturally aspirated 1.2L 1197cc.
  • Width of Exter is less only 2 persons can sit comfortably in rear seat.
  • Petrol Mileage is low. It is 19.2kmpl (MT) and 19.5kmpl(AMT).
  • Exter has less interior space, good for 4 persons only.
  • The NCAP safety test has not been done in India.
  • Less power and less torque engine. In CNG it even becomes lower.
  • Less leg room inside as it has lower wheelbase.
