GPF issue in petrol car | What is GPF in Petrol Cars?

What is GPF in cars or we ask GPF issue in petrol car are the question the internet is filled with. The petrol car now have a system called as GPF. Is it like DPF or different? Does GPF need cleaning or regeneration like DPF? So there are many such questions of which everyone wants to get answer. Today we will cover the entire topic ‘What Is GPF in Petrol cars’ and we clear all the doubts about GPF.

What does GPF mean for cars?

When a car runs it emit some harmful gases release them in the environment. The government make same rules related to the emission from the cars. The government call it emission norms which defines how much NOx a car can emit. Now these days the norms are getting more strict and that is why to control the emission even from the petrol cars the companies are using GPF which is known as Gasoline Particulate Filter.
It is like a filter that help in burning the harmful gases and NOx produced from the engine. The government need less emission from the cars do whatever is needed less carbon form the cars is under the BS6 norm. The system of GPF is already there in the European Cars and it is compulsory.

Diesel cars generate soot mass in the form of carbon which a DPF traps and this needs to get burn, and that is why it needs regeneration at early stages. When we drive diesel cars less or drive only in city then this problem occurs. The carbon is already high in emission from a diesel car, injector problem, fuel pattern damaged, unburn fuel remained or any other problem like it can also cause high soot mass. In those conditions forced regeneration is needed.

It is now coming in the petrol BS6 cars, from the time the BS6 norms have been implemented. But it looks like a Catalytic Converter and can not be differentiated by a common person. It is less complex than DPF.

Do all new petrol cars have a GPF?

It is not necessary that all petrol cars have GPF we just need to control the NOx emission. Some cars have a engine design in such a way that GPF is not needed. New petrol cars also leave or emit particulate matters but in very less volume, the carbon emission from the petrol cars are very less but still they do emit. In this situation regeneration is also there but it is done for very less times. Normal driving and less highway driving can also reduce the soot mass and start regeneration.

But that is having no problem in petrol cars because in petrol cars GPF gets regeneration more easily in the city drive also so it never gets chocked. The passive regeneration in a diesel car needs to drive on highways at least once every week for 40-50 km with a speed of 60-70kmph. At this situation it takes regeneration more easily.

In The GPF the particulate matters gets trapped more easily and will be neutralized by reacted with the metal itself. There are filters also that work for filtering the carbon emissions. But in DPF Urea/DEF is being injected so that it gets neutralized.

GPF issue in petrol car symptoms

No effect on mileage but because now the cars company are using dual injector technology, it can be present in GDI or NA both engines. The ultimate aim is to control the carbon emission by any means. if it is under control then no GPF is needed. There is no limitation that only GDi engine will have GPF.

Diesel DPF cars have another problem of having increased level of engine oil, this problem will not be there in GPF. This happens due to mixing of diesel oil with engine oil, but that will never be happen in petrol cars because petrol evaporates easily.

Engine light may appear or there may be any kind of performance lag. So there is no as such symptoms of GPF issue but It can be checked with the use of Scanner during the service of car.

The GPF doesn’t give any extra problem nor it needs extra efforts to regenerate. Petrol engines reach high temperature very early even till 1000 degree Celsius temperature and that is how they can burn the Particulate Matter more easily. So in regular running it is able to take passive regeneration. In very worst case when it gets blocked, the forced regeneration is done during the general service of the car. It will need not much extra cost.

Do GPF Get Blocked?

The GPF can also get Blocked but in some very particular cases

  • where only city drive is happening for a very long time. Only city and bumper to bumper traffic the car is covering.
  • Regular short trip happening in the city.
  • Also if any problem in the fuel occurs any wrong fuel is filled then extra carbon is there and the GPF can get chocked also.
  • This is more applicable for a GDi engines because GDi engine should preferably filled High Octane fuel.

The chocking of the GPF happens very less and this will be identified more easily with the false code using a scanner. Regeneration done at the service centers itself no extra effort is needed so not much burden of GPF is there.
