Is Engine Flush Good Or Bad ?

Engine Flushing is a method of cleaning the inner walls of an engine without opening it and Engine Flush is a liquid which is used to clean engine contains impurities. Now a days it is also important to see weather it is beneficial or not. So is engine flush good or bad we gonna answer today with help of this article.

When is Engine Flush Needed?

is engine flush good or bad

The engine flush is an liquid comes with some cleaning agents. The Engine flush is used to clean the dirt and carbon which with time accumulates in the engine oil itself. The engine oils rotates in the engine and help to release heat and keep the engine cool. If engine oil is not changed and old oil is being used for a long time then the sludge gets accumulated in the form of impurities. These impurities damage the property of engine oil and makes it thick. Engine oil will not be able to cool the engine instead it will increase the accumulation of the sludge on the interior parts of the engine. So before this sludge gets accumulated we can use engine flush.

How To Use Engine Flush?

To use an engine flush we should drive the vehicle first for some kms so that the engine will get warm. Then stop the ignition and then put the flush liquid into engine directly. Now start the ignition and leave for 5-10 minutes in idle condition and do not accelerate. Then after 10 minutes switch off the ignition and flush the engine oil out. The engine oil that comes out will be darker in color and will be thicker because it contains the sludge with it.

Right Method To Flush Engine Oil

Generally the above steps are being followed to do engine flushing. But Ideally there should be one more step for the complete cleaning. In that step we have to take another flushing oil which may be a simple engine oil and put it into the engine and fill it. Now again start the ignition and keep engine on for 10 minutes. Now stop the ignition and again flush the entire engine oil out. This step will clean the entire sludge which settles down in engine during first cleaning. This step should always be done for better cleaning.

Will Engine Flush Damage The Engine?

is engine flush good or bad

Engine oil rotates in the engine and travels into its parts due to which slowly the sludge starts forming. This is sticky form of the oil and this is harmful for the engine parts. Flushing increases engine performance by cleaning engine oil and removing the thick sticky formation. But the flush contains cleaning chemicals too which are considered Hard Chemicals. These chemicals can sometimes damage the parts also. For example there are wall seals and there is cavity filled in form of sludge as these are working as binding agent for the edges. So this cavity will be removed by the flush liquid but this can damage the edge’s seal also. Ultimately oil leakage may occur. Also the flush is made using harsh chemicals so it can make inner lines wider inside the engine and it can negatively affect overall functioning of oil circulation system.

Similarly when engine oil becomes thick like grease then we should never use Engine Flush. It chokes the air filter and prevent the engine oil to travel to its parts. This chocking increases the heat inside the engine and the engine failure may occur. In this situation like if engine oil becomes more thicker than always use semi synthetic or fully synthetic oil it is basically thinner than natural oil, never use natural oil for engine. So it is possible in some situations that Engine Flush can damage the engine.

  • Engine flush should be used only after a right time intervals like in every 20000-30000km running.
  • Engine flush is not suggested if the car left standing for a long time like for 4-5 years.
  • When Engine oil is not changed regularly then the impurities start accumulating. The old engine oil causes more sludge.
  • Flushing should only be done when you do not know cars condition or history. Or in a condition when the owner used very cheap kind of engine oil due to which sludge gets accumulated on the passage of the lines and those passage gets blocked.

Does Engine Flush Really Work?

Yes Engine Flush works but only in some situation. Engine flushing is good if done in 20000-30000km but regular flushing is bad. The reason is simple that the sludge starts accumulating and gets stick to the inner walls of engine. If flushing is done after a long gap then it can clog the oil strainer which stop the flow of engine oil to its part and cause can even engine seize. The sludge layer accumulates after a long time when the oil is not changed.

Engine flush cleans the interior parts but sludge accumulates on parts which are not actually moving. Now improved engine oils have come in the market which itself contains cleaning agents and additives that do not let the sludge accumulate.

Engine flushing is not suggested by the car makers when we check the user manual because the Engine oil itself contains cleaning agents and now Oil Filter have also been used in the engine too. Which keep cleaning the engine oil and do not let sludge accumulate in the engine.

If we are changing the oil regularly and there is no part damage then engine flush is not required. If sludge gets stuck in any oil flow channel then it may prevent oil flow and create load on the oil pump. In that case we should keep checking the oil filter and try to keep it clean and change the engine oil.

How long should an engine flush stay in?

Although the engine flush is suggested to be kept for 5 minutes but 10 minutes time is also ok. After every 25000km engine can be flushed. If you have driven the car for over 80000km and more then engine flush is not recommended. It will clog the interior parts. Rather one should only change the oil and check the oil filter. Use of a fully synthetic oil is recommended which has a self cleaning property and do not sticks. It should be done after every 3rd service. servicing also increases engine life at this time but

Timely servicing the car and keep changing Engine Oil regularly. Check coolant, gear oil, air filter, oil filter, and spark plug in every service. Keep checking these all regularly will remove the impurities out from the oil itself.
